A Busy Week

A Note From Preschool and Kindergarten

This week we learned more about nutrition. We read the book Bread and Jam for Frances which tells the story of a child who eats nothing but bread and jam for a few days and discovers the enjoyment of trying new things and eating a variety of foods. Students investigated celery and made snacks with celery, peanut butter, cream cheese, raisins, and olives. We started learning about My Plate. My plate shows the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet. A copy of My Plate is included on back and you can find out more at www.choosemyplate.gov.

Mrs. Fowlie, our guidance teacher, read The Berenstain Bears Learn About Stangers. She helped students understand what a stranger is and reinforced that children should not talk to them. She also read a book called It’s My Body. This book talked about safe boundaries and how to respond to unwanted touching. One example from this book was friendly, gentle tickling versus rough tickling that hurts. She taught the kids to assert themselves and say that they, “Don’t like it when you tickle me like that!”

In literacy we all worked on writing our names, the parts of books, and rhyming. During math we worked with counting, shapes and colors. Kindergarten students started math homework this week and we will start reading homework next week.

Please take a look at what extra clothes your child has here at school. We noticed that some kids have extra t-shirts and shorts, but no extra warm clothes. Also kids do need sneakers on P.E. days (Monday and Wednesday).
